These "bestest closest companions" (as they lovingly allude to one another) first met before they experienced Simba. Pumbaa was initially exiled from his "sounder" (a warthog settlement) in light of his inablility to control his noticably foul oders.

While meandering however the wilderness he unearthed the nest of three hyenas (Shenzi, Bonzai, and Ed). He additionally ran across a tied up Warthog who was to be the hyenas' next feast. In the wake of liberating the Warthog named Pumbaa, those two crushed the hyenas and afterward discovered the sanctuary of the Cobra who had still not consumed the Princess Tatiana. Together they crushed the Cobra, liberated the princess and gave back her to the province. In appreciation the Meerkat King offered Timon fortune, his little girl's hand in marriage and full reestablishment of his settlement enrollment.

Timon request the untouchable Pumbaa to be allowed full settlement enrollment too. The lord rejected and gave Timon the decision between everything hie's ever needed, or a life outside of the settlement with Pumbaa.

Timon picked Pumbaa.

Pumbaa got worried about Timon's conceivable future second thoughts for his careless choice, yet Timon let him know, "...from this day forward not, one or the other one of us are going to stress over anything once more!" To which Pumbaa answered, "No stresses for whatever remains of our days!" And they called their ne life reasoning "Hakuna Matata"
